Dr. Susan O'Brien received her medical degree from the University of Medicine & Dentistry of New Jersey Medical School in Newark where she also completed a residency in internal medicine. She then completed a fellowship at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, Houston. Dr. O'Brien is currently Ashbel Smith Professor, Department of Leukemia, Division of Cancer Medicine, at MD Anderson where she is also a clinical consultant and special assistant to the physician in chief.

Dr. O'Brien is board certified in internal medicine and oncology. She is on the scientific advisory board of the Lymphoma Research Foundation and is chair of both the National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN) CML and ALL Guidelines Panels, she also holds memberships in the American Association for Cancer Research, American Society of Hematology, and CLL Research Consortium. In addition, Dr. O'Brien is on the editorial board of Journal of the National Comprehensive Cancer Network (JNCCN); editor of Clinical Advances in Hematology & Oncology and MD Anderson Cancer Center’s Cancer Care Series; section editor of Cancer (hematologic malignancies) and Current Hematologic Malignancy Reports (chronic lymphocytic leukemia). She has also written over 600 peer-reviewed research articles and 250 abstracts.
